Dawn Elkin
THE INTERVIEW
What do you love about working in law?
No two days are ever the same, the work is varied and interesting. Having spent more years than I care to remember in Criminal Law I am loving Media Law. A very different pace but equally as important.
Tell us more about what a practice manager does?
I always say that a Practice Manager is the jack of all trades master of none. The aim is keeping the firm running smoothly, support colleagues and help with developing the firm to attract and retain top talent.
Who gave you your first break?
Gareth Peirce from Birnberg Peirce, I was the List Officer at the Old Bailey and she used to come in and commented that I was always juggling lots of balls and essentially encouraged me to apply for a role that they were recruiting for.
Why join ABBAS Media Law?
Having spent 18 years at the Old Bailey and a further 17 years working in criminal law firms I wanted a new challenge. ABBAS Media Law is a firm that not only values its clients which is evident from their pledge but clearly values its staff. I am passionate about the wellbeing of my colleagues, and it is important to me that anywhere I work now promotes this.
Any tips for producers trying to keep up with the ever-changing restrictions affecting our industry?
Come to ABBAS Media and we will be able to guide you.
I was blown away when I first read the client service pledge, its so refreshing. It ensures that the client knows exactly what they can expect from us and that it is followed by everyone who shows how important our clients are to us. We never promise what we cannot deliver and we definitely give our clients the Rolls Royce service.
We’re all about enabling creativity and minimising risk, can you share a time where you think this happened with great results?
Tell us one surprising thing about you?
I am allergic to gold and also red and white wine…..thankfully Prosecco and Champagne are safe!!
What are you working on right now?
Week two in post so still training and getting to grips with new systems, new working practices.
What’s on you watch list this month?
Slow Horses I love plus series like Night Agent, The Recruit and The Diplomat. Any crime drama so I can repeatedly tell the TV 'that would never happen'.
What do you do to kick back and relax in the evenings?
I am a huge Newcastle Untied fan and love to go up to Newcastle to watch them live (this can be a bit of a mission when you live in Essex!). Despite decades of working in criminal law I do still enjoy reading crime thrillers. I love to travel, find new gins to add to our collection and of course, meeting with up with friends.
